Tips on Hiring a Virtual Assistant

As your business grows, your tasks and responsibilities increase as well.  Is it time for you to hire someone who can assist you with these tasks?  Some business owners choose to hire a virtual assistant instead of an in-house employee and the decision depends on you.

virtual assistantWhat are some of the advantages of hiring a virtual employee?  First, you don’t need to pay for your employee’s benefits or taxes so it minimizes the cost of hiring.  Second, you do not need to acquire additional equipment or widen out the office space to accommodate employees.  Third, you can hire professionals who specialize in the exact field that you need regardless of their location.

Another advantage is that you do not need to spend time or money on training.  You can hire people for a certain time period, depending on the demands of your business. During off-peak seasons, you may choose to do the task on your own and rehire your assistant when the need arises.

Once you have decided that you want a virtual assistant, here are tips on how you can find the right person for the job:

Know which tasks to outsource. It’s important for you to decide which tasks you are willing to designate to someone else.  Choose tasks that take a lot of your time to do and which do not involve the handling of confidential information.

Find a specialist. You can search for potential candidates from reputable outsourcing companies or freelance jobs listings online.  It’s best to choose someone who has a considerable experience on performing the job that you require to do.

Carefully evaluate the candidate’s portfolio. Check out the list of clients that the assistant may have previously worked for.  If possible, call up the character references and know what they have to say about the person.

Conduct interviews. Since the job interview will take place over the internet, it’s very important to consider how the candidate responds to your questions.  Is he/she giving you the information you need?  Does he/she take the time to understand what is being asked before speaking?  Do you feel comfortable with the interaction?

Remember, your virtual assistant will be helping you out in a lot of things and you will be communicating online on a daily basis so if you’re not comfortable, you may have a difficult time working with this person.

Know how much you’re paying for.   Freelancers are usually paid based on the hours of work.  Typically, the ones with experience and a solid portfolio or project history may demand a higher rate per hour.

It’s important for you to decide how much you can afford to pay before making the decision to hire.  Remember, you may want to give a new freelancer a chance since he/she may be willing to start with a lower rate to prove their work quality.
