If you have decided to implement credit card processing with your business, you should be well aware and prepared to take on your responsibilities, as a seller.

What responsibilities would those be? In this article, let’s take a closer look at each of these duties that concerns every merchant that accepts credit card payment.

When you accept credit card payments from your customers, you will be asking them to provide very important information such as their whole name, address, telephone number, and credit card number.

Such information are the target of identity thieves and if they fell into the wrong hands, they can be used to commit fraudulent activities against a person.

As a seller, it is your duty to ensure the security of your customer’s data. How? By acquiring a secure shopping cart software and payment gateway system. You will need these two essentials to process credit payments and it is extremely important to make sure that they are secured with at least 128-bit SSL (secure socket layer) technology.

Merchants must also follow ethical practices with regards to using the customer information collected. A trusted seller must never give away customer information to other parties or use it for other purposes except for that one transaction. These details must also be stored safely to avoid unauthorized access.

Merchants must take responsibility to avoid charge backs. Obviously, charge backs can badly affect the profitability of your company. Hence, every seller must ensure that the products are sold and delivered in an excellent condition. It is also important to have a clear policy on Returns and Refunds.

It is very important to take all the necessary precautions in accepting credit card payment. Don’t hesitate to take the extra time to verify the customer’s identity and the accuracy of the credit card details.

For example, for retail transactions, it is recommended to request the customer to provide at least one solid proof of identification. Check the signatures and make sure that the signatures on the ID presented, on the back of the credit card, and on the purchase receipt are exactly identical.
